P2: Faith, Doubt, Dread
Ten pictures about being caught in a storm: fear, doubt, being rescued — and the quiet that faith can keep inside you even while the storm goes on.
Prologue
Night has deepened, veiling my eyes.
I cannot see where the wind and waves arise.
I only know that merciless swells are tossing my boat.
I feel only the icy sea draining the warmth from my body.
I hear the wind and waves conspiring, threatening to swallow me whole.
I cling desperately to the boat’s crossbeam,
yet I feel my strength beginning to fade.
Lord, will You save me?
Will Your mercy reach me
as it reached those who came before?
I let the wind and waves toss me,
for my heart tells me that You are calling me to rest.
That rest is a light shining upon me.
I reach out to touch it and say,
“I know You.”
It is Your steadfast love that never abandons me.
It is my comfort and my salvation,
guiding me toward the shore
I am meant to reach.

Starting point
“Faith, doubt and dread are states of mind in mundane Christian life. This can be circular as the environment changes. Doubt is the bridge between faith and dread.”
In her process book, Eunice says dread feels like fear so big that everything blurs; doubt feels like standing at a crossroads, not knowing which way to go; and faith shows up in opposites — outside and inside, storm and peace, dark and light.
Dread
Eunice starts with dread — fear at its strongest — inspired by the Bible story where Peter steps out onto the waves (Matthew 14:29-30). Everything around the figure looks shaky and dangerous. The swirling motion, the darkness, and the scattered yellow specks let you almost feel the fear in your own body.

Eunice says faith is a peace inside you that can stay even while everything outside keeps roaring. She draws people as simple outlines, then shows what they feel inside — with watercolor, pastel, blurry photo effects, and light.
Doubt and Save
A small boat pushes through thick clouds and darkness, with bits of light scattered all around.
Faith I
A calm figure glows in the middle of the storm. It hangs as one half of the final pair. (The original file was small, so the gallery shows a copy that was enlarged and sharpened with computer help.)
