Love is what lasts. Children express their own feelings and imagination, rather than imitate Van Gogh.
Jump to a lesson above. Lesson 1 keeps its sequence with shorter notes; Lesson 2 has a flexible two-hour flow. Lessons 3–6 retain their earlier drafts.
The plan is public; student photographs, names and class records stay private.
Lesson 1 — The moment you were loved, kept forever
Draw a moment when you felt loved, and keep that memory.
Look
Visit the Van Gogh room and quietly look at the postman and the poet.
Why did he paint this person?
Read
Open the chapter-two Reader and read only the first section.
Someone painted a person they cared about. The picture keeps that memory. Today, we will paint a moment we want to remember.
Read and play
NIV · 1 Corinthians 13:13 "And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love."
Read together, then play: MEMORIZE, followed by Start recall. Choose a helpful difficulty, allow hints, and do not race.
Share
When did you feel loved? Who was there? What happened?
The teacher shares a small, everyday moment first. Children may listen before sharing. Note one word to help each child begin drawing.
Draw
Draw the moment, not just a portrait. Let the child choose what to show, how close to look, and the background and colours.
What do you want to remember?
What belongs in your picture?
What will you draw first?
If needed, brainstorm a few compositions. AI may offer options, but must not add details the child did not give. The child decides.
Closing and next week
I painted … . I want to remember …
Choose one original photograph of a cherished person, object or place with a parent and send it to the teacher. The teacher prepares the subject; in Lesson 2, children paint the background. Original photographs stay private.
Teacher note
Do not force sharing or compare stories and pictures. A child may instead draw a moment when they cared for someone else.
Lesson 2 — Drawing eternity in lines
Paint a background for the prepared subject to express the child's own sense of eternity. Van Gogh offers things to notice, not a model to copy.
About two hours, with flexible pacing.
One passage
Read Ecclesiastes 3:11 together, then play a little. Keep the relaxed atmosphere that worked last time: no race or ranking, and children can help each other. Save the fuller conversation for the end.
NIV · Ecclesiastes 3:11 "He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end."
② 进门问题 + 轮流 present / Opening question and sharing
Who or what did you choose? Why? What do you most want to keep?
Take turns introducing the subjects. Listen without rushing toward a correct answer.
Look before you talk
Spread out the atlas and quietly look at two or three pictures. Each child notices something in the background, then may share an association or feeling. Close the atlas before planning their own work; there is no need to explain every page.
Brainstorm together
Start with the child's subject and one question below. Record their words without giving everyone the same composition. It is fine not to know yet.
Optional prompts
- What is beautiful here?
- What can you see there?
- What might change? What do you hope will stay? /
- What is beyond the paper? /
- How do you want people to feel? /
- How can you paint your feeling? /
These are starting points, not a checklist or a rubric. Do not offer a menu of Van Gogh backgrounds.
Think with a partner
Older children first listen to younger partners, check what they mean, and ask where they want to begin. Try a small sketch together, while its owner chooses the subject, placement and colours.
Make
Paint the imagined background around the prepared subject. Older children help younger children finish first, supporting materials and techniques without taking over their choices or work, then continue their own pictures. The teacher supports both partners.
Return to the passage
Read the verse again beside the children's work. Let the day's experiences guide a fuller conversation about beauty in its time and eternity in the heart. Do not force every picture into the same interpretation; an unanswered question can remain.
Out the door and next week
In my background, I hope … will keep …
Invite a closing sentence and explain next week. Record or keep the work so the same backgrounds can be used again.
Preparation and print materials
Prepare each child's printed subject, drawing paper, scrap paper and art materials. Subjects need not be people.
Lesson 2 print downloads
Choose one explanation language; the atlas has bilingual titles. Print A4 at 100%, atlas in colour and single-sided.
Use the explanation sheet as needed, not as an opening script. Sources are in the teacher reference at the end.
The week before
If a subject is still needed, talk about a cherished moment, let the child choose one original photograph, and send it to the teacher. Prepare the subject with room for a background; existing prints need not be redone.
Parent note: “Children will paint their own sense of eternity through a background, not copy Van Gogh. Original photographs will not be made public.”
Lesson 3 — Love looks longer
房间锚点 / Anchor:Roulin 的胡子;第一章 "First, look at what your eyes can prove"。
The reversal
The week before (teacher)
Run of the lesson
Doorway question
English: No looking, no photos — what colour are your mother's eyes?
“Now I'm working with another model, a postman in a blue uniform with gold trimmings, a big, bearded face, very Socratic. A raging republican, like père Tanguy. A more interesting man than many people.”
Scripture
1 Samuel 16:7 (NIV) "The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart."
Bible Sequence(10–16
https://bible.lucasacademy.org/?passage=1SA.16.7&translation=NIV
③ 把人画回自己的背景里 / Draw the person back in 剩下的时间全给这一件事。
Out the door
English: Last week I drew the person. This week you did — into a forever that was already yours.
Watch out
Lesson 4 — A halo for an ordinary man
房间锚点 / Anchor:Boch 肖像;第二章 "What a halo used to be for"。
Doorway question
English: Most paintings in a museum show kings, saints and rich people. Why them?
Follow up: in your family, who most deserves a big painting on a wall?
Evidence:Letter 673(1888-09-03)——
“I'd like to paint men or women with that je ne sais quoi of the eternal, of which the halo used to be the symbol, and which we try to achieve through the radiance itself, through the vibrancy of our colorations.”
Scripture
Genesis 1:27 (NIV) "So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them."
Bible Sequence(10–16
https://bible.lucasacademy.org/?passage=GEN.1.27&translation=NIV
One sentence: what a person is worth was settled at the making, not by fame.
Out the door
English: Gold used to be for saints only. Who did you give it to today?
Watch out
Lesson 5 — Love looks like chores
Doorway question
English: On the day you were sick at home, who did the job that was yours to do?
One sentence: the man he had painted a dozen times went and swept his floor.
Scripture
1 John 3:18 (NIV) "Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth."
Bible Sequence(10–16
https://bible.lucasacademy.org/?passage=1JN.3.18&translation=NIV
Choose a helpful difficulty, allow hints, and do not race or rank children.
Out the door
English: Love very often looks like a broom.
Watch out
展厅自己的原话是:*pain is not a magic ingredient for art*。
Lesson 6 — This room does it to you
Doorway question
English: Do you think your painting belongs in a museum?
One sentence: Van Gogh gave a starry sky to a postman. This room gave a whole wall to a nine-year-old.
Scripture
1 Corinthians 12:22-23 (NIV) "On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor."
Bible Sequence(10–16
https://bible.lucasacademy.org/?passage=1CO.12.22-23&translation=NIV
Out the door
English: Van Gogh gave a whole starry sky to a postman. We gave a whole wall to you.
Watch out
Keeping it honest
English: The room keeps historical evidence and curatorial interpretation apart. The classroom keeps the same line: the letters are evidence, the scripture is what we believe, and neither may impersonate the other.
| 可以说 / Say this | 不要说 / Not this |
|---|---|
For families who don't share the faith
English: Every lesson's passage has a scripture-free equivalent question. The teaching moves and the making exercise are identical.
| 课 / Lesson | 经文版 / With scripture | 通用版 / Without |
|---|---|---|
Verse cards
English (NIV) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Cor 13:13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. |
| Eccl 3:11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart. |
| 1 Sam 16:7 People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. |
| Gen 1:27 So God created mankind in his own image. |
| 1 John 3:18 Let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. |
| 1 Cor 12:23 The parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. |

Teacher reference
These are planning references, not a script to read to the children. Keep historical sources distinct from the lesson's biblical interpretation.
Three sources for Lesson 2
English: Letter 663 describes an imagined portrait background conveying love and infinity; Letter 673 links colour with consolation, hope and the eternal; Letter 628 connects rural subjects with a longing for the infinite. The seed-growth example is a classroom interpretation, not a quotation.
